TWO Reviews : The Whole Shabang

From Special Needs Book Reviews : http://www.specialneedsbookreview.com/2012/03/24/the-whole-shabang-vol-1/

From Little Sheep Learning

Posted on February 28, 2012 by Elaine (Littlesheep Learning) http://www.littlesheep-learning.co.uk/

The Whole Shabang: Volume 1 is a practical resource book with an accompanying CD for teachers and parents working with children with additional needs or children in early years
settings especially those using Makaton signs. It was created by Shabang! (Kim Reuter and Russ Elias) who have spent over twenty years experience of creating music, song, drama and theatre for special needs settings so that others could use their music with the children they teach.

When I opened the book the first thing that I noticed were the quirky illustrations by Kath Stewart, this may be a book for adults but it is packed full of illustrations and great thought has been put into it’s design.

The book is jam packed full of information and ideas – it really is a resource. It not only contains the words and illustrations Makaton signs needed for the songs on the CD it also has the sheet music so you can play along yourself, suggested ways to use the songs (and adaptations as appropriate), sensory ideas, art activities and more  - enough information to create a whole scheme of work I’m sure.

Volume 1 uses covers two of the themes used by Shabang! over the years (apparently they are planning more editions) - the sea and the garden. There are start and end the day, to build language and to encourage participation and turn taking but most importantly of all the songs are catchy, easy to sing along to and repetitive – all the things that children like. Plus the inclusion of the Makaton signs means that the songs have ‘ready made actions’ and all children can learn these signs. If all this isn’t enough it also features a step-by-step guide related to EYFS assessment scales, NC attainment targets and `P’ performance scales for special needs to save teachers the task of having to evaluate the learning the children can cover whilst they work on these songs and activities!

If you are a teacher and want to get the children in your class really enjoying music and drama (and learning Makaton) then visit http://www.shabang.org.uk to get your hands on this fantastic resource (there are even sample tracks on there so that you can listen before you buy)!
